      As you have read before, I know exercise is your best selection for self improvement .  There are physical, mental and health benefits once you establish a good routine. Whatever you choose to do, as the commercial says ” just do it ” . Certain activities will achieve greater success for your needs but all will help create the new, powerful ,  masculine man you are becoming. 

   So Sunday night I was having this very conversation over a cigar with my friend Pete ,whose opinion I trust. As we discussed the merit of exercise, he noted that the key was always to remain active. I always stress consistency ,  because it helps create other good habits but as long as you keep moving, literally and figuratively , you maintain youth and strength .  

   The stereotypes of weightlifter versus runner are pretty accurate if you let it. But if your workout includes strength and flexibility ,  your benefits multiply .  But most important is to keep the blood flowing, your muscles limber and breaking a sweat once in a while. The satisfaction of a good workout carries on for the rest of the day and provides the body a good night sleep because it needs to shut down and recover . 

   And that natural flow allows the body to relax and put forth a more focused effort because it is not straining or fighting against itself. As the bodies motions become more fluid so do our thoughts. This is the runners high, the zen martial arts provide and why yoga can be done as long as you desire. Which truly is the essence of exercise, your quality of life improves because you are improving all aspects of your life.

    The most important quality of any man is confidence. You can buy an expensive car, wear a designer suit and invest in a great watch but if you are lacking self esteem, you just wasted your money. This is the key elements to all of your success .  My main purpose for this blog is to create a better version of you, not change or teach you how to fake it with cheap lines or smoke and mirrors .  But the foundation of all I share goes back to developing your confidence . By giving you the tools to improve your current situation ,  your confidence will grow because we are now aware of the areas that can benefit and are now the better because of this. All of our success ,  love, professional ,  social are byproducts ,  not goals. However, they can only be attained by improving ourselves and totally believing in the great person we truly are. 

   Yet, there still are guys in great shape, sharp dressers, and attractively groomed who still lack confidence .  And there are out of shape, bland clothed men who get women and are still liked and respected. Is this totally against all I preach ? Absolutely not, this confirms what I say. But the better you present yourself, the better you feel  , the easier it is to believe .  These positive reinforcements will ; show others you are not plain , average, common, and more importantly show yourself that you have progressed , improved and upgraded. So in order to not only looking good, you must think good. When you walk, talk, think and act positively it conveys a stronger message than any words do. 

    But it isn’t always that easy. And even though you are doing all the right things ( like following this blog ) there may be that missing element .  So smile, not faking but actually appreciate the man you are becoming . This not only shows the world you are living a good life but gives you that spike of positive energy. People respond to a smile, a good handshake, a kind word. Everyone likes to be treated well and you will now be the source. And as the environment around you improves, so does your quality of life ,  which is what success truly is.

    As I have mentioned before, exercise provides a major boost to your image, mentally as well as physically. Your posture , energy and muscle tone improve . However there are limits to all our gains , determined mostly by genetics. But that doesn’t mean that the image we are creating stops there. Our attire greatly contribute to that visual, if used properly . We can greatly influence that look, positively as well as negative . 

   The key is to maximize our strengths, and minimize our weaknesses . So we must make sure that the eye is drawn to the body parts we want. And we then accentuate our masculinity .  

   The silhouette that is desired is the upside down triangle . Wide at the shoulders, sloping inwards to the waist. And that must also influence what we choose to wear. Fit is our # 1 priority ,  but the fit has to accentuate that look. We can’t have our clothes too tight because it will draw more attention to you fat areas or how thin you are. What I find just as bad or even worse is when men dress too big and loose. This gives no form so the heavy guy looks fatter and the thin guy is just a pencil neck and tiny wrists. The real crime goes to the guy in shape who loses that edge buried under fabric. He is now wasting his advantage by hiding a major weapon. 

   So you are now working out, eating properly but no visual changes. A jacket with shoulder pads raise the triangle on your body and also keeps the eyes up on that level. This not only widens your top but creates the illusion of difference between chest and waist. There is a term for this called the Adonis Golden Ratio .  According to this rule, your shoulders should be 1.6 times wider than the waist. So if your waist is 28, the shoulders should measure 45 in order to meet this ideal. This equation was developed by studying ancient statues, natural athletes and models, all based on the concept of most appealing to females. But you may never reach that goal, so by creating the illusion of strong wide shoulders and a slim solid waiste , you appear more Adonis like. And giving her this impression of athleticism masculinity will give you more of an advantage to conquer her.  Then she can find out what a great guy you are even if we are just as shallow as they are !

   The fastest way to improve yourself is bodybuilding. Now you don’t have to look like Mr. Olympia ( actually a bad idea for the average guy to try ) but just working on your muscles make a huge difference. I use the term bodybuilding because I feel we are all bodybuilders , whether we lift weights or eat hamburgers non stop, we contribute to the body we develop. Exercise is the quickest and easiest way to create a positive change in ourselves. This combined with a proper diet , based on your goals, whether to lose or gain weight  is something anyone can do and see results. As your physique improves, your posture , how you appear in your clothes and positive attitude grow also.

   What I have found is that if we want to increase our muscle development, supplementation is needed. However 90% of the products sold in vitamin shops are crap. Most of your dietary needs can be supplied with a good diet. All those super charged supplements are all hype, or make such a small difference that they’re really a waste of money. In order for our muscles to grow, we must add more protein in our diet. You can eat more meat if you choose but that is not always so easy. You have to cook more which can also add more fat, which if you are planning on losing weight, does not help. Or the other option which I recommend is a protein powder for post workout shakes at a minimum. They say take 2 drinks a day every day but unless your on a consistent lifting regimen, that may be too many additional calories. But after a heavy ( not necessarily weight lifting but calisthenics, isometric or any combination of them which is what I do ) workout, a protein shake feeds your muscles to aid their growth.

  The other supplement that is actually proven to work is creatine. Regular use of creatine improves your workouts, recovery and development. The key is to stay hydrated, since the function of this is to fill your cells with more water. People claim they look bloated and your muscles stay soft and fat but that is more a poor diet than anything else.When used properly there is a big improvement . I would recommend you add this to your workouts a little while after you have established and are following a routine. All other diets and supplements are more placebo.

   When athletes are shown selling all those super hero products, they are just earning a check, not letting you in on a secret. And the same way they are pocketing $ , if you fall for the hype, you will end up peeing your money away, along with all those extra vitamins, amino acids and minerals.

   The key to accomplishing any goal is the effort you put in. No matter how small or minor it is as far as the big picture, what you give is always related to what you get back. If you are not dedicated to your goal, it will be that much more difficult to reach. Now some people have a natural talent for things but for the most part we all have to work hard.

  Now trying hard is important but more valuable is consistency. A one time shot is interesting but in order for to truly learn anything you must put time in. No matter how hard you work, one must follow through. I have seen many students at the dojo who train like maniacs , but they show up once every couple of weeks so there is no progress. They are always at the starting stage, never gaining any momentum or familiarity . And that goes beyond just the physical but the mental state also. The more you do anything , the better you will be. Even small, regular effort gives results.

   So if you start dressing slightly better, every day, it becomes a more comfortable and familiar it will be. If you chose to be a little more social and break out of your shell with women, it needs to be done as much as possible. Eventually it loses the fear factor and becomes a regular part of your persona. It will no longer be something new you are trying but who you now are. Just as exercising becomes a new habit, so will upgrading your clothing style . And the key to all improvement is your mindset. As long as you are totally convinced and dedicated to the process , you will succeed. You must be willing to go every day towards your goal. But if you work consistently, and take advantage of every opportunity to improve , you will triumph.

   A big part of your look is your hair. Great hair stands out just as horrible hair does. And the advice I will give even goes if you are bald. The key is maintain. Don’t go too long between haircuts because instead of just taking care of your look, they will be forced to recreate it. The same goes to a bald head, keep it shaved and sunscreen when outdoors ( my mantra) and you will always look clean. However time and money don’t always allow this so this is where you can make a difference.

   As your hair starts to grow out it doesn’t develop evenly. So if you are trying to stretch out the time between haircuts , you have to control the appearance . If your hair grows faster on top or the sides, you have to master the use of gel or wax. While you don’t want it to look like a helmet, you need it to hold . An important thing to remember is to wash frequently now, because you cannot allow this to build up. That can do more damage to your hair than a bad look for another week.

  The other sign is around your ears and your neck. A clean look at these spots will keep your image tight because those are 2 areas that stand out. Here is where you need an electric razor with an edge cut on it or a pair of hair clippers, if you have. Your neck can be shaved with a plain razor but you can’t work the ears. So if this is all you can do, pay attention to this on a daily basis.

   Now your ears are a big difference , especially since once the hair grows out it sticks out. this changes the shape of your head , which now affects the total look. Here you have to keep the original look of your haircut, not changing or improving.  That is where the biggest risk exists, because you are not a professional. But a little improvement goes a long way. But these are temporary fixes, nothing will compare to a clean cut. And even better is the feeling when you walk out, knowing you are on point and eveything is going well. Your stock grows 10x, most importantly to yourself.

   Since my last post was very serious, I had to approach the next topic with a different attitude. It is the least necessary but the most sought after and the most noticed by both sexes. It is the hardest to get  (calves are a close second ) yet most want them. It is abs , the six-pack, that ripped midsection. There are tons of guys with huge chests and arms with big bellies.  Some are hard as a brick wall but round and protruding, killing the aesthetic look.

   Now the most common cliché, which is 100%  true is, abs are built in the kitchen. Your diet is the determining factor in the amount of definition on your body.  There are skinny guys with little muscle development who are ripped when they flex. But in order to put on size and strength , you need to put in those calories. And if you don’t have a high metabolism , do lots of cardio and follow a strict clean diet, it won’t matter. You can have the strongest abs, with the hardest development and it may never be visible. Or what is even worse, you can flex and look great , but relax and be soft and stick out.

   The big dilemma with abs are , deep defined cuts aren’t a show of strength or power, like other muscles. The true strength of abs is the abdominal wall. If you look at fighters, who unquestionably have to have the strongest stomach , they aren’t slim and cut like a bodybuilder , but solid and may even stand out. the cuts and definition isn’t from the ab work , but from the stamina training and cutting weight. Deep cuts, obliques and serratus development mean nothing if they can’t absorb strikes for possibly 30 minutes.

  Yet everyone admires that six pack.  Womens eyes open wide when a model or their favorite pretty boy actor shows off that stomach. Military screams “Stomach in chest out ” ! I work my stomach a lot, part as a martial artist and part for the look ( a big part ), so whenever I talk about my scars ( last post ) , I always show the one on my stomach. It always gets a reaction because I can show off and get the sympathy at the same time ( whatever it takes ! )

   So is it important to have a six pack ? The simple answer is no. However that doesn’t mean be soft and pudgy. Develop a hard flat stomach and if you are genetically gifted ( the other cliche ) it will come. Like bicep peaks, some have it and others no matter how hard you try , just don’t show. That doesn’t mean either are impossible, but you have to dedicate a lot of time and effort , to the point of obsession.

    One of the main things I do to achieve this look is to keep as much tension as possible on my stomach. Whether working out or just sitting around. Isometrics are a big part of my workout, as a bodybuilder and a martial artist. That tension keep the abs in a tight hard state as much as possible. It maintains the flatness while I do my crunches and hours later ( even after my many mugs of Bustelo). While you are sitting, whether in your car or anyplace,  suck in and flex your stomach hard and hold as long as possible. An old school strongman exercise is the vacuum. The would suck in their stomach so hard the ribs would stick out. The classic physique was broad shoulder, small waist. If you see the recent Mr. Olympia competition, they all have big, ripped, protruding bellies. Not the look most want to achieve.

     But wide shoulders and a solid waist will always look good with whatever your style is because your selection is now limitless. You don’t have to worry how clothes will appear on you because you will now shape the clothes. And when she sees how good you look in those clothes, and you feel as positive and confident with your physique, you won’t be wearing them much longer !

   This past Wednesday I got another slap in the face from reality. I am 99% positive, happy outgoing but there is that occasional moment when you can’t dodge the bullet. I have been fighting skin cancer for a while , which isn’t that big a deal most of the time. You get your annual ( 6 months for me) body scan and if there is anything suspicious they remove and send to lab for biopsy. Sometimes the very removal takes care of everything, other times it requires surgery ( like in my case) or more aggressive treatment. Now this was my 4th biopsy that returned anormal and 3rd that required surgery ( excision) . Luckily I walked in and walked out ( thanks Joanne) in under a half hour.

   But what if that wasn’t the case?  The danger of skin cancer is that if unchecked, can run anywhere else in your body and possibly develop into a serious and possibly mortal disease. So every time we go for a check up , especially as we get older, there is always a chance of not so great news. Which means that our endless time on this planet is actually coming closer to an end. So every day we have left should be very important because there will be an end.

    Which makes every decision you now make extremely important. Usually we go through life doing our thing and always having tomorrow to continue, correct or eliminate our actions. But once there is a finish line present, even if we don’t see it our time is extremely valuable because it now has a limit. And the key word in this is ACTION. We now must do. Any procrastination is a loss because that is one day less of living the life we want. Even if you have 10 – 20 -30 years to go , that still is a limit. So every day that you don’t take that trip you always dream about it becomes further and further away from you. That car you wished you had ( if that is important to you ) will never be in your view if you don’t make every effort to get it. That hot girl you know but are so stuck in the friend zone, or worse she doesn’t even notice you, will never be on your arm ( in your bed soon after) if you don’t make that move to stand out and have her want you.

    So every fucking day you must make a difference. Every morning you wake up has to have a goal, something must be accomplished. Even if your goal is just to hang out , do it with a purpose. Embrace the Sun, enjoy the sounds of the world, even be nice to people, especially those you don’t know or don’t deserve it. Everything matters. Love your family, your friends and most important yourself.

   One of the key elements of any personal growth is not on the surface but how we feel internally. We can buy many great suits, expensive watches and drive luxurious cars , but these will always just be things that people notice, instead of you. The man must improve the same as the other outer parts of his life do. And the way this shows is in his attitude towards life. The calm confidence of Jason Statham ( I love those Transporter movies) in a tuxedo is the same when he wears a sweat shirt. You have to be comfortable in your own skin, no matter what is covering it. And that is all in your hands.

   Once you start eating right and exercising, your body will respond by showing the desired look. This makes your clothes feel and look better. Now as you start adding new attire to this improved body people will begin to notice. Whether you get comments or just long curious looks, a change is happening. While they at first only see the external, the bigger change is within. You have now determined to improve yourself so your appearance is only part of this process. However the greatest improvement starts within. Just by making the decision to improve your health and appearance  a change has occurred. But in order to succeed you must belive in yourself. As you continue to develop on the outside,  you grow in confidence.  So no matter who doubts or questions or even ridicules your appearance you must be strong willed. Those reactions are not only challenging you but also reflecting themselves.

   You are no longer ” one of the guys ” . Women will no longer ignore you but will test you because you have now distanced yourself from the crowd. And that my friend is the true show of progress. When others recognize your new found prowess that is your new gauge. Every step you take to improve is a threat to all. Your buddies not only see you growing, they have to face their own weakness . Women notice longer have the upper hand any more because you are leveling the field. And once you flash the pearly white smile ( that I  showed you how to get last post ) , you are now displaying more weapons. This is a totally different man than they have been accustomed to and as you continue to improve,  so does the belief in yourself .

  A smile conveys a strong message. A relaxed, confident, comfortable man can smile in any situation. People trust a smile, eye contact and a good handshake. Women notice your teeth as soon as you get close enough for further evaluation ! So your teeth should be a subject of great attention to you.

      Your smile is a big part of non verbal communication. Where your general appearance is seen at a distance, this is judged up close . Now any details, positive or not are noticed. You can cover up or downplay other body parts but your mouth is watched as soon as you speak. Women place a lot of value on your teeth. We have all been with someone with something stuck between their teeth and it is all you keep looking at. Just like horrible breath, it takes away all focus on your words and spotlights this terrible flaw. Most women consider this a deal breaker, since the last thing they want is to kiss a dirty ,smelly mouth.

      Therefore it must be a very important part of your daily regimen. Teeth take time to brighten and shine so you must have patience, but are very noticeable once you progress even a slight bit. However as your mouth improves, so will your ability to smile more often because you will be more confident with your teeth. And as you smile more, it will be noticed more. Just as your muscles growing affect other aspects of you , so will your teeth. But just like dieting and weightlifting are based on consistency , not intensity, so is your oral hygiene. Of course  regular visits to your dentist are extremely important. But as we eat , drink , smoke and even chew gum, it affects what goes on in your mouth. I do many of the harmful things they say to avoid, I drink lots of black coffee, smoke cigars and like red wine but I regularly get compliments about my teeth , partly because I smile a lot.

       One of the basic things for all health is drink plenty of water. And make sure you brush your teeth properly. Brush after every meal, change your toothbrush with your dentist visits ( every 6 months), and floss at night. Now that keeps you good clean and healthy but we are striving to go beyond average. In order to get that impressive attractive smile regular toothpaste isn’t good enough. I have been using Colgate Optic White Platinum ( no sponsor, just anecdotal ) and am very pleased with results. Coffee and cigars have been a major part of my diet for too many years so my teeth were yellowing . In order to bring them back to a basic white, I had to get a whitening solution. I ordered a product with a peroxide solution that went in a tray for my teeth .  After a few applications there was a noticeable difference. So it took a while but my teeth drastically improved and I continue to use that treatment. 

   As all your great qualities are improving, some stand out even more than others. And as opposed to every other guy out there, you will now become more attractive and approachable. Your teeth will now become your strong point. Now when you get close and flash your smile you are no longer walking into her scrutiny but she has now entered the ring with a predator . Be prepared to bite !

    Originally I was planning on writing on sneakers. As I have grown fashion forward I am only wearing sneakers to workout or driving to work where I switch to my work boots ( steel toe). But trying not to be a sneaker snob ( except for Vans ), I did some research on Tumblr and noticed something else. I saw too many hoodies and am also very opinionated about those also. I see too many grown men wearing hoodies, the sweatshirt type with pockets in front. Those fail in 2 negative categories for my stylistically. First they are too loose and formless so your body is not present and more so the ones with writing on them seem too childish. Not that we should not be youthful, but the image we are creating is one of mature, cool confidence, so brand, team or hero worship shouldn’t be upfront. You should never have the same wardrobe as your girlfriends son.

   However , as I looked for pics that showed what I was looking for, I found the image on top. That style really works for him, not just because he is young. It has everything I thought I disliked , although not for me but it fits. I wanted to delete it but it stayed on my mind because as  certain as I am about this topic it still works ! So I looked for more pics to prove my opinion is absolute and then found this one.

Once again , a great look that I myself can wear ( except with boots or even loafers) but contrary to my fashion sense. As I studied more I see it is a front zippered type but still a hoodie. So what I realize is it is worn as outer garment, like a sports jacket or cardigan , which is my personal style. And the other pic has the hoodie under a denim jacket, the opposite of this but there is 1 big common element. They are both used as layers, a major component of any great look.

    The hoodie itself isnt the main part of the look. As a shirt, the hoodie is not what one should wear but as part of the package it is a great active look , not as the main ingredient. While it won’t be a common thing I would wear , except for work as a layer of warmth if you feel it fits your personal style , go for it. As comfortable as they are , you should be just as comfortable in a blazer, sports jacket or cardigan. Because the clothes represent you , not the other way around.

   One of the greatest MMA champions of all time is Fedor Emilianenko. He was known as ” The last Emperor ” and dominated the heavyweight division for years. And like most fighters , continued competing way beyond his prime and suffered unnecessary losses. But what was always so impressive about him was that he always found a way to win. No matter what style of opponent he battled, he never lost focus and achieved victories. What I later found out was that he trained the same exact way for every fight. No matter the size or style of the opponent, he did the same exact workouts in the gym. He was so confident in his abilities that it did not matter. Fedor knew he was the best so if he entered the ring at peak condition he would not lose. 

  And that is the approach we should all take with ourselves.  At this stage in life, we know our strengths and weaknesses.  Be confident in what we have and downplay those other areas. But being realistic with ourselves isn’t a restraint . It allows me to see things as they truly are. Being short limits lots of slim leggy styles, but since I know that already,  I won’t waste time studying things that don’t compliment. Like Fedor, I cannot do anything that doesn’t contribute to victory. 

  This same attitude has to be used with diet and exercise.  If I need to lose weight,  then my diet and workouts have to be accordingly.  If I  need to increase calories, my protein should go up, not donuts and soda. My sleep must increase if my energy levels are low. Our thoughts have to be positive and commited to the process. That is the only way to succeed in creating the warrior we wish to be. 

   So whether climbing in the ring, in your office or going out , if we are prepared physically and mentally our possibilities for success multiply.

   Communication is key to any relationship. Personal or professionally, we speak beyond our words. Our tone of voice and body language influence more than what we are saying. Before you open your mouth people are already getting a message. So it is very important that we present an image that conveys a positive presence. If it is someone we are meeting for the first time, that first impression is vital.

   More important than what we are wearing is how we are wearing it. Your posture , smile, eye contact send an image that speaks much louder than any words. It actually influences how they feel which is stronger than what they hear. A confident, powerful attitude is present from the moment you are in sight. Since I am short, I am always standing straight , with my chin up , not to the point of arrogance ( unless you are a weak jealous guy staring at the interaction) but creating an aura of self assurance. My shoulders are squared back , showing a masculine presence without flexing but  with calm poise. Always maintaining eye contact since that tells as much about you as any pick up lines you think you might need. Like 2 prizefighters facing off in the center of the ring, your focus will not be challenged, just not so intense!  A strong handshake also lets all know you are a person of character . And actually the less you say at first is better since that allows the person to take you in before anything else influences that image. They will tend to trust what they believe they see before you add ( or detract) from that illusion you have created. Any forced actions will come across as phony and can damage all the positive aura .

  So when anyone sees you , whether testing you as a female studies all men, or in the workplace, you come across as strong, confident and cool. And just as they believe it, so do you because you are living that alpha personality. And the more you remember to follow these concepts, they become a natural part of you. It is no longer the image you are creating but truly the image of who you are.

I tend to associate things with that which I know best and am most comfortable with. So everything has a karate connection to me. Whether I am working out, getting dressed or talking about chicks ( my 3 favorite things , oh and a good cigar 3.1 ) it all relates back to the dojo. As an instructor,  fighter and student , the same mindset prevails in all aspects of life. And that is what we all need as we progress as men in this world, clear vision. Your focus is what guides or blinds you , if you allow it.

As an instructor , I show my students technique. I explain , demonstrate and then we drill endlessly until it becomes second nature, and then we practice some more. If you are not beat, drenched in sweat and smiling , I failed as a Sensei. But your growth as a martial artist isn’t in just learning the technique. As you continue to develop, you take that basic technique that has not nor will ever change and adjust and adapt it to your particular style, attitude and ability. I should not have a room full of clones, but have provided the instruction for you to take what I was taught by my Sensei Deluca, and create yourself . That is the art of karate, not just be a copy, because we are all unique individuals.

That thinking is whats needed in order to grow and succeed in our journey as men. We cannot be copies of anyone else because that would be the worst lie we live. Actors, fashion lines , magazines can influence you but must not rule your choices. That world is not reality. Actors are dressed by professionals, who customize every item and hair on their bodies. So unless you are exactly like that person, or look you admire, you cannot copy . What you can do is take an item, Jacket for instance and add it to your wardrobe. But try it on and feel comfortable in it, not just look good. The big secret of dressing well is to be so comfortable, relaxed and confident that you shine through the clothes, even if it is really what everyone first notices. If you do not “feel ” how you are dressed, that stands out even more. So just as my students work a front snap kick until it just happens for them, so must you adapt to your new upgrade. Which is also why I suggested just 1 article of clothing, a jacket, dress shirt or whatever the new you is adding to your arsenal. Get comfortable by wearing, moving and getting looks of admiration , jealousy or laughter ( jealous bastards ). I get a lot of comments saying, “You coming back from a date” , ” Why so dressed up ” or ” Where are you going afterwards ” when in reality I just like looking as good as possible with being too overdressed. Is it vanity , arrogance, being too conceited ? You owe me 10 push ups just for asking ( your muscles will thank me later).

As your eye for style grows, so must your risk taking. But we have to always be realistic with ourselves.A look on me will not always be to your taste, even if we are twins. You take, twist , shape pound whatever you feel is right for you and make it your own. There is no right or wrong, if you’re truly feeling it.  Just listen to your Sensei , study and practice what you are shown and get out there and kick ass.  Make sure your belt and shoes and watch match. In my dojo everything matters, and that chick checking you out has already noticed.

 Our nutrition is a very important matter. It affects our appearance and more important , performance. So although there are tons of material out about diet, it should be handled in a simple process. What we put in is directly related to what we get out. Our food and drinks are key to health and attitude because when we are functioning at 100% , we also can act at our true potential.

  However we should not stress at what and how we eat. Nutrition is basically protein , carbs and vegetables ( my breakdown, not a nutritionist ). With those 3 categories we can maintain not only a healthy diet , but can achieve a strong masculine presence. Any exercise program will only succeed if the diet and sleep are equally enforced. Protein is the main factor in muscle building and maintaining a lean body . So whatever your goals are , protein is the essential foundation. Do not go crazy with your choices of meat or fish because fat content in meat is an important necessity . Eggs should be a big part of your protein intake, yolk and all. Depending on your goals, weight reduction or growth, your portions will be determined by that factor.  Now the most important issue is your carbohydrate intake. While your carbs provide energy for your daily processes, if not utilized, will turn to fat. So as you are working towards your ideal body, learning the quantities your body need is an experiment in self control. Because carbs are also a very basic staple of every ethnic group. Being hispanic, rice is part of practically every meal growing up. Pasta , potatoes and bread, are most ethnic groups common carbs, but also what as we age give us that belly as our activity and metabolic levels slow down. So we have to be very careful about how much we eat and consuming these early in the day, when we can easily burn them. Don’t go sodium crazy unless you have an illness, but limit your sugar since that does affect you in many ways.

  As long as we are totally conscious of how important our diet is to reaching our goals, the desired body can be achieved. Once we start eating right, and exercising regularly, the development of the ultimate male we have within us is becoming  reality. Our confidence is now reinforced as our body improves. We are becoming more attractive, powerful and masculine. That is heavily influenced by exercise, diet and sleep, since our testosterone development is affected by those factors. But the stronger we get , internally and externally , the greater our self image improves. You cannot grow in the eyes of others if you havent done the work for yourself. The discipline and the results of a proper diet will be a key part because as we believe and achieve this new lifestyle, it allows all other growth to follow. Like a fighter training for battle, all parts are required for victory. We cannot allow failure in any part because the new man does not weaken before any challenge. That was the weak insecure past fellow we left behind.  We have to be totally positive and focused because we have chosen this path. We already know where the easy path leads. And I refuse to let that happen again, when it is all within our reach.

 While I always want to keep a clean simple look, there are small details that can make a big impression. I prefer a basic fitted look because it presents our best assets while keeping a mature yet attractive appearance. Now the exact details on how to dress are not the focus of this post,however it still doesn’t mean that anything you throw on will look good. You have to recognise certain styles fit your demeanor and body type . That is only found through trial and error, or you can get professional help, like in my case , I contact my good friend, suitaddiction.com and he will meet me to solve any questions and stop me from spending too much money . Because expensive does not equal better .

   By selecting the right accessories, we can take a nice shirt and pants and make you stand out in a room of average guys. I always wear a watch but depending on my footwear, that is how I select which to use. Leather shoes, usually dictate a leather watch and belt. I can also wear a metal watchband, but it will not be a sporty or casual one. I mentioned belt because the typical belt shoe synchronicity should be followed. Not so exact with color, but with the finish; shiny or matte. The watch must always fit the shoes because the belt may not show but your hands and feet are always present. Whether sneakers, loafers or wingtips, women will always look and as you reach to shake hands ( my move) she sees your watch next and then your SMILE ( a whole post or 2 in itself ) !

  The more casual your look, the more variety you can have with these choices , as long as they play together. But a nice, not necesarily expensive watch and good, clean shoes and a well kept belt will be the details that make you shine.

Nowadays, anyone and everyone can claim any type of fame. Reality stars are celebrities for being themselves but better exposure than most others. With social media we have many famous people that nobody knows, yet that doesn’t stop the machine.

  •  Last Friday I went to a great rooftop lounge for a friend , E.Santos cigars , and had a great time with my son and friends. There was a photographer and DJ Nino Brown, and it was a great night of cigars liquor and incredible people.  The following Monday, I get a message from Instagram congratulating me. As I follow the link , I then get tons of texts and messages . Cigarbossoftheday selected a pic of me with my son to be their Boss of the Day. Now the fame and endorsements are non stop, however I had to get back to work and then go shopping right after so my 15 minutes of fame were extinguished like the Olympic torch.

What I want to point out is that I was wearing a $12 H &M shirt, Sears jeans, a watch from Groupon and black chukka boots. Armed with a tight haircut, a close clean shave, doused in Obsession and biceps built with rubber bands, I came I saw and I conquered. Looking good, feeling good, my presence was positive and confident. So in reality , this recognition means nothing, for me and all my friends it’s a great sign of love and warmth . With minimum effort  you can get maximum results.

  While any exercise program is useful, one has to have a goal to truly maximize the effort. The first step of course is to actually get up and move. In this case a basic fitness program will do . but eventually you will progress and need to refocus. Which is also what anyone who is active and even works out somewhat has to consider. The new man we are creating has a physical presence that draws respect and attention, from both men and women. So just getting in shape is ok for the average man, but we are seeking beyond average , common, boring. The new body we are creating has a dual purpose, one is to show the world, and more important to fortify your own image of who you want to be. As you develop that body, your confidence grows also. Changes in your posture, energy and aura develop with your muscles.

  With modern science we can now totally construct the body we desire. We can build , mold and sculpt our physique to practically the exact form we want, within our physical and genetic limits. Where you are weak, you can now strengthen. Your fat or soft areas can now be reduced and develop the muscles associated. We are all bodybuilders, from the moment we start feeding ourselves. Now if you choose to eat poorly and not exercise, that is the body you are building. But now with a goal, a vision, your body image is a real attainable goal that you should be focused on. And as your body progresses, so will your pride, confidence and masculinity.

The most important person you have to convince is yourself. If you are not totally committed to create, change and polish the new person you are becoming you will never succeed.  The main reason is it is not an act. You are truly becoming the real person you have always had buried inside. If that inner strength has no support , how can it manifest to the world ? The true goal of this mission is to develop you. A  better life, dating women respect from others, confidence in your appearance will be by products of this transition, not the focus. If you don’t feel your positive powerful persona, how will it reach out to others? This is your main motivation, the pursuit. The end result is just another step that will be reached once you have taken all the previous steps. If you jump to the end, it will be of no value. As you grow into the man you wish to be, there has to be trial and error . Since this is all new territory for you , what you would like and what you are truly capable of being are two separate things. Not all styles will suit you or be comfortable to you. To just imitate a celebrity is not becoming a man, it is just playing dress up. Owning that shirt, enjoying those shoes, showing that incredible smile are for more valuable than anything off a hangar.

   The first factor and most important when selecting clothing is fit. Fashion, fabric, color and any other option is secondary. No matter how expensive, great quality, or design the article has, if the fit is poor it will always look bad. Most men dress way too big for their size and this creates a bad image. Although the main choice for the average man is comfort, that goes against what we need to project in order to upgrade our look. If you are heavy and your shirt is very loose it makes you look even heavier. There is no end to your body in the shirt so wherever the fabric goes, it becomes you. And a droopy, saggy cloth creates a more damaging illusion. The same goes if you are thin. The wide neck and sleeves make you look even skinnier. Since there is little form within, all we see are elbows and adams apple. However too tight shows bones on the slender and fat on the large man.

So the fit has to flatter the chest and shoulders. Notice when you get a fitted shirt it goes by  neck, chest and sleeve length. Important details. What is exposed, you want to present in the best light so you want to draw the eye to chest and shoulders, even if you aren’t muscular. Only other guys care if you have huge muscles. But when you bring up all of your attributes, it will show your strengths and downplay your weaknesses.

With the right fit a plain shirt will always look good. A designer shirt that is too big will lose value. Clean , neat , and good fit always beats a heavy price tag. A Timex watch can finish a look ( see Daniel Craig ) as well as a Rolex worth thousands that slides up and down your arm. Would you wear expensive shoes that are very tight?  But clean , polished basic shoes are a great touch ( and important to women) . They pay close attention to shoes, watch and belt, and smile. They know a man who pays attention to detail can appreciate a good woman.

The hardest part of any program is the diet. You can exercise for an hour and it is done. Sleep is more of a scheduling process but nutrition is a 24 hour issue. Now you are eating with a purpose, not just getting 3 meals in a day. What your goals are determine your diet. Your protein, carbs and fat intake will affect the results you are looking for. But so will the snacks and other temptations available. However it is not as complicated as people scare themselves to believe. Magazines and YouTube have lots of programs designed for people losing weight, gaining muscle, get shredded and all other body sculpting. But for the average guy, counting calories to the extreme, measuring every item is not necessary. What you have to make sure is that you always eat clean ( natural unprocessed ). Preparing your own food leaves no room for error, guarantees the quality of your meals and most important, doesn’t allow bad foods to sneak into the menu. The same goes for your snacks. When you have your snacks with you , it keeps all salty , sugary foods away. Yet if that is your desire, you must find healthy alternatives that satisfy, not sacrifice. Those harsh diets are for professional athletes who have nutritionists, not a working man who has to live a normal life. Replace candy with grapes, raisins cherries, strawberries. Approach your new diet from the point of view of looking for what you can eat, not what you can’t. Try not to leave many meals in the hands of others because there is where you can fail.

However don’t go crazy if there is a day that you don’t have the dinner according to plan. Or you go out to lunch and eat like everyone else. One bad meal will not affect your goals. The same way one salad does not make you a vegetarian. But never forget you had many years of cheat meals which you are now trying to correct. So while we have to be realistic about how strict we are with ourselves , there has to be total dedication in order to succeed. And once committed to the process, all other aspects of your growth to being the man you are creating will all be attainable.

One cannot rush the process. As you advance in your improvements, you have to take the time to allow the changes to become part of you. We have to stop looking for the finished product but absorb the steps taken to reach there. If you were to do all the steps needed it would not be an improvement in yourself. It becomes a costume that you put on for that moment. Since it is an actual change in you , you have to become the new version of you, not just look and act like that. There are 2 big problems with this action. One is that you will not  be comfortable in your own skin . You will not feel relaxed or confident because you are just wearing the look. That is the big difference between fashion and style. Fashion is what you buy, style is how you wear it. Just like karate, if I put a black belt around your waist, that does not make you a black belt. BTW, I would NEVER do that anyway ! The whole purpose of belt progression is a gauge of your ascent . As you advance in rank your technique improves so you become a good green belt, brown belt and so on. And in life, just like karate you will be tested . And the white belt with a black belt around his waist will be exposed brutally. In society you can only fake so much . Especially with women who are constantly analyzing and testing you. I call this the Patroclus syndrome. Patroclus was Achilles best friend and during the Trojan war, Achilles was angry with leadership so refused to fight. As the tide turned against them without him in the battlefield, Patroclus puts on Achilles armor and charges into battle. At first the Trojans ran in fear and he killed many but eventually as he engaged in more combat they saw he wasnt the same warrior and he died and the armor was stolen. And that false show will come crumbling down on you when you become exposed.

And that is the other problem. While there will be obstacles with in this growth , you have to find yourself in the course. Through trial and error, you find what works for you as an individual. We are all unique so maybe certain things may not fit you others may just need a little tweaking. But the only way you can find your niche is through experimentation. I can tell you how to fight but if you never climb in the ring It is just words. In order to develop, one must succeed and fail until you either find what works for you or find another angle to reach your goals. If you allow those losses to stop you progress it may be more harmful because you havent learned anything. Your vision has to be on finding what does give you the results you need , not focus on what has worked for others but somehow isn’t allowing you that level of success. The transition is necessary in order to develop that best version of yourself. Just let it happen, and you will become the man you know is within you. You are capable of being that man. All the time that you havent found him makes the path longer but not impossible. Let the true you awaken .

An important part of your transition is keeping motivated. At first the quick basic changes are obvious but most others take time. The action you take for improvement is more than just doing it. Whether it is improving your non verbal communication, upgrading your wardrobe, or a more drastic attitude development, it goes way beyond that moment.

What you do at that moment , while is a major accomplishment at that time is still just valuable for that moment. That is why it is difficult for you even to be comfortable and confident. Since it is a change, the difference is external and more so internal. It is vital that you adjust to the new you, and as time goes on, and you continue to make progress, it becomes more familiar and comfortable. The habit now is a natural part of your being as it is now a regular action. The opposite is when you where clothes that make you feel awkward, hesitate when you need to be strong, and worse doubt your motives because you still don’t believe in yourself. If you aren’t confident in yourself, how will anyone else see what you are capable of. Like every martial artist knows, the more you practice the better you get. The better you get the harder you practice because your improvement carries beyond your actions and now become part of you.

Taking the first step is the hardest. We all know a change to this has been long due but there are usually two obstacles. One is the fear of change. Worrying about what people are going to think or if you can even pull it off yourself are common doubts. The most important element of this is your desire to break out of your funk and become the man you want to be. Most negative comments are people who are so used to seeing you bland and boring . However your greatest critics will be your own friends who are jealous now seeing you develop into a better man and they are stuck in the past. The other problem is not really knowing where to look for info on the changes you need. Having a big makeover is very difficult to maintain and even accept. So one step at a time is the best approach. Get a good $ haircut, and take care of your face. This is a quick easy upgrade that is easy to maintain. A good clean shave is always a good look but if you prefer facial hair keep it very manicured. This leave less room for error as it starts to grow out. Shaving exfoliates but a good soap or creme a few days a week keep dead skin off which keep skin healthy and less visible wrinkles. A big improvement will come when you moisturize. This gives a glow to your skin and hides all flaws. No big expensive products are needed, just be consistent. Sleep and drinking water will give your body the help it need to improve your face.

Exercise makes a quick easy improvement. Weight ( or any resistance ) help your image, which is muscles, posture, and energy. As your body improves it allows your clothes to look better on the new improved frame. All these changes create an upgraded image and activates a new confidence . Where you first had to convince yourself that these improvements might help,you now see how you feel, and the biggest feedback is how everyone else reacts. Guys are peeking envious glances at your rebirth and women will be looking at you in a whole different way.

There are small quick adjustments you can do to improve your image. It’s not a quick fix but it is the beginning of the correct path you need to improve. The purpose of this isn’t to fix but a quick band-aid. One of the most common flaws of most men is their posture. Whether it’s from sitting for hours all day or just a tired, too relaxed slouch it is a poor reflection of yourself. It makes you appear smaller, weak and less masculine. All things you definitely do not want men or even less women to think about you. With a jaw line horizontal to the ground, shoulder squared, chest out ( not protruding however) it gives the image of a strong , confident man. When that man walks in a room people notice, not flashy or exaggerated but respected for who he is , even if nobody knows who the hell that guy is. A good firm handshake always gets a great reaction from men and even women since that is also uncommon today. Not that insecure challenging crush but a strong, firm held a second or two longer than normal always gets a positive reaction. But what really creates a great image is a focused gaze. Not a psychotic nonblinking stare but 100% interested, paying attention to all details . When you start looking away, darting your eyes all over it comes off like you are scared, uncomfortable and weak. Women love to test you and try to read you by your eyes , especially where  and when you look away. Fighters walk straight at each other before the fight to intimidate and show no fear just before the bell rings. While your battle may not be as dangerous, you are being judged and evaluated especially at first glance. With just these few fixes you can create a strong positive masculine image.

At the beginning, things are slow to develop. You are starting the transition, mentally and physically. But it is also where your greatest changes occur. Just simple basic corrections in your life produce results. You may have been on the right path but a tweak will spark the difference. One major change most men need is more sleep. We try to do more but never seem to have enough time or energy to fully attack . Rest allows your body to recharge and recover. Your brain gets a chance to settle and refocus. Your muscles grow in your sleep, not in the gym. Your metabolism continues to function instead of holding on to fat because the system cannot rest and stabilize.

And that all shows in your face. Bags under your eyes, saggy dull skin. Your posture suffers because your energy level is down. Your digestive system never has a chance to clear itself so fat is held at the waist. Your workouts will now improve because you have energy to lift, diet will work because digestion is optimally functioning. One tweak affects all facets of your life if you make it an important part of your lifestyle.

The secret to strength training is no secret. We all know what needs to be done to lose weight and or build muscle. Eat less and exercise is basically for weight loss, and eat ,exercise and rest build muscle. All new programs are just different packaging of same old concepts. All new exercise machines are just modern ways to provide resistance, which is all we ever needed to build muscle. We are so caught up in the newest and easiest way to getting and in shape that we have overlooked what has always worked for hundreds and even thousands of years
As time went on, our concept of power and strength changed. Originally strength started as function but later became sensory. We saw pumped up bodies, are entertained by over developed athletes. But for the common man strength and muscle never changed.


Remember the feeling of driving a new car ? The smell, looking at the interior, enjoying the smooth ride.  That feeling of comfort,  confidence.  It’s the same as when you walkout with a good haircut,  a nice fitting suit,  the sensation of a good workout.  All things we can do any day. The key is starting the change.  Treat yourself to a good shirt. Get a full 8 hour night sleep  to recharge and recover. All these little things add up and construct your new attitude.  If every week we do one of these things, by the end of the month we are creating a new mindset because we have externally added positive changes.  As we start feeling better,  looking better,  you begin to think and believe in a more positive manner.  Just start.


All our lives we took care of all our responsibilities. We went from boyfriend, husband , father, employee, mortgage owner. But the one person lost in the process is you. So, we got old, got fat, or lost the body we once had and now have medicine and pains to live with. As we fall into the comfortable slumber of aging, we lose more than just our physical condition.  But that doesn’t have to stay like that.  One you realize that this current state is so disappointing it is time to take action. And the first step in the right direction is you being here. It is time to be the man you one were, should have been or want to be.


As we grow older the years should not age you but used to grow. All the experience we gathered throughout time is a plus not a disadvantage. Everything is useful, success and failure, it all depends on your perspective.
