Winter brings a whole different challenge. More than just the cold, which is expected , but shorter days and extended darkness. This brings mental stress on top of the physical battle against the elements.

For the average, weaker man this is a period of weight gain, depression and general inactivity. But instead it should be used as a time for repair or construction. Since you will be spending more time indoors, that is the opportunity to lift or workout ( whatever you do ) more because you can. Holiday season is the worse for maintaining a good diet but if you are increasing your exercise, it will not be a negative.

What I find the greatest harm the cold does is to your skin. Cold air and wind dries and chaps your face. We must drink more water , which most don’t realize because we are not sweating like we do during the summer. But in order for your body to generate heat it requires more water. Another thing we need is sunscreen in December. The Sun does as much damage in all seasons. Since I work mostly outdoors, I am constantly exposed to the elements so my skincare is very important.

When I leave my house in the morning I make sure I use a moisturizer with SPF. Lately I’ve been using Nivea or Aveeno products because they are less greasy. The key is just using a little but spread all over. Although my main reason is vanity, cold air dries and peels your skin. But a moisturizer keeps your face protected with the natural oils in each product.

Just as important is your bedtime care. During your sleep, the body repairs itself. It’s when you build muscle and immune system recharges. Your skin is also part of the repairing program at night so it presents another opportunity to care. I use Nivea Essentially Enriched Body Cream. I should be using a product specifically created for my face but I take my sleep seriously so I found 1 product that serves all purposes.

By maintaining a consistent regimen, there won’t be much of a difference if I should miss a day. Just like working out, as long as you regularly keep doing the right thing you will get positive results. While you don’t have to be perfect, the more work you put in, the easier it becomes. Good habits are vital in all aspects of life, however starting is always the hardest step. But any positive act is a step closer to being the best you can be.
